Winter Checklist for Skiers and Snowboarders

Skiing and snowboarding are the top sports at Sturtevant’s and Ski Mart so here’s our checklist to help make sure you’re ready. Take a look through your gear bags before you head to the mountains. If you’re bringing kids you may want to print a list for each person.

Some people always have their bags packed…others are getting into the sport. It’s a good idea to look through the list.

BASE LAYERS: have 2 sets if you’re going to be a regular on the mountain. Choose something that wicks moisture away from your skin and keeps you warm. DO NOT WEAR COTTON. Cotton traps the moisture next to your skin, allows heat to escape, and should be saved for apres-ski. Choose fabrics like wool, polypropylene, polyester/elastane, tencel/spandex. Look for brands like Smart Wool, Hot Chillys, Under Armour, or Helly Hansen. Our stores carry base layers for all ages so come check out the selection. Here is some of what you can find. MID LAYERS: can be anything from a fleece jacket or pullover to a lightweight down jacket or vest. Choosing a mid layer depends on the weather and your comfort. A typical layering could be: base layer +  light down jacket or fleece + outer shell jacket. You can also try out insulated jackets that are warmer on their own and may need fewer layers. Here’s an example of men’s mid-layers.

SOCKS:  Avoid thick socks and no cotton!  With the proper boot your feet don’t need super thick socks. Actually it’s best to get the thinnest sock that you’re comfortable wearing. We have a good selection of socks for kids and adults. Go with basic colors or get something fun and flashy. For people who need something extra to keep them warm we have heated socks, heated gloves, heated vest, and heated boot inserts. While these seem expensive, they can last several seasons with the right care.  Shop socks.

If you’re getting into the sport or taking inventory of your gear this checklist should help.  We have expert staff who can help you choose the best apparel and equipment for you and your family.

EQUIPMENT OPTIONS: RENTING vs. BUYING NEW vs. DEMO (Try Before You Buy)

Winter sports like skiing and snowboarding can offer a lifetime of fun. Here are some of the options that we offer at Sturtevant’s and our Ski Mart stores.

RENTING:  Our Ski Mart stores in Bellevue and Tacoma handle gear for all ages, both daily and season rentals.  This is a great way to have fun on the slopes for a few days or a short vacation without breaking the bank. Picking up your rental gear close to home SAVES YOU TIME when you get to the mountain. FYI: season rentals fill up early in the season. If you missed this opportunity ask to get on our list for early rental selection when you pre-pay.

We have rentals for SKIING, SNOWBOARDING, SNOWSHOEING at both Ski Mart stores and CROSS COUNTRY available in Bellevue.

CONSIGNMENT GEAR:  Our Ski Mart stores in Bellevue and Tacoma have consignment equipment.  You never know what you might find in the racks at Ski Mart. Some of the gear is from customers who outgrow their gear, some is from our local reps who need space for next year’s equipment.

BUYING NEW: At Sturtevant’s you can expect to find the newest ski and snowboard gear for all ages and abilities. We have expert staff who can guide you in purchasing what you need and we offer a performance guarantee. Our goal is to give you the best experience on the mountain and we back that up. You can’t get that level of service when you shop online.

STURTEVANT’S PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE: We are confident that our experienced staff will help you select the right equipment for your needs. If for some reason, the product does not meet your expectations, then we will give you 100% of your investment towards another product that we/you feel will better meet your needs. We ask that you allow us the opportunity to work with you in these situations to find the best solution (we may recommend a demo ski before making another selection, or we may recommend additional boot fit aids).

PERFORMANCE DEMOS: At Sturtevant’s we have an excellent selection of skis so you can TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. Our selection of skis and some snowboards are available so you can test the latest technology and see what suits you best.

HOW IT WORKS: You must make reservations either in person or by calling 425.869.7669. We do not guarantee skis will be available, but will do our best to accommodate you.

Demos may be picked up after 3 pm the day before and must be returned before noon the day after.

Customers must bring in boots to set equipment. A driver’s license and credit card are also required for the paperwork.

COST: Demo rentals cost $45 per day.  Customers can apply three times of demo rental cost towards the purchase of a new pair of skis.
